Making pizza instead of ordering it helps you control the ingredients that go into your pizza. Some fast food places use much unhealthier foods and ingredients. With making your own pizza, you control how much of what goes into that homemade sauce. You can also be certain of the freshness of the vegetables. And you can know what kind of environment it was made in. Doing this can help your pizza be much healthier and better tasting. Those are two qualities that everyone wants in a pizza.
The two main elements of a pizza are the dough and the sauce and here are their recipes:
Sauce
Ingredients
1 kg Blanched tomatoes
2 tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
3 cloves Garlic , finely chopped (optional)
1 Onion , finely chopped
Basil leaves, a few sprigs roughly torn
Salt to taste
Whole Black Peppercorns coarsely pounded
2 teaspoons Sugar
Method
1. To begin, first boil the tomatoes with required water in a saucepan. Once you see the tomato skin peeling, switch off the heat.
2. When the skins have peeled you know the tomatoes are ready. Peel the skin off the tomatoes, remove the core of the tomato and roughly chop them.
3. Do keep all the juices the tomatoes release, this will add body to the tomato sauce. Keep the chopped tomatoes aside.
4. In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and onions. Stir for a few seconds until it begins to sizzle in the oil and the onions soften.
5. At this stage, add in the chopped tomatoes and the roughly chopped basil leaves, some salt, sugar, black pepper corns and stir to combine well.
6. We will now use a hand blender to coarsely puree the ingredients together to get a saucy texture.
7. Cover the pan with the lid slightly ajar and simmer the mixture for 20 to 30 minutes until the sauce is thick.
8. Keeping the lid slightly ajar helps to thicken the sauce by evaporating the excess water.
Dough
Ingredients
1 cup warm water 40-43 degrees C
1 TBS sugar
1 TBS active dry yeast
1 TBS olive oil
2 to 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
Method
1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees C. Grease a pizza pan and set aside.
2. Put warm water into a large mixing bowl.
3. Add sugar and yeast and stir to combine.
4. Let mixture sit for 5 minutes, or until it becomes frothy and bubbles form.
5. Add olive oil and gently stir to combine.
6. Add 2 cups of flour and salt and mix with a spatula until a ball begins to form (dough will still be slightly sticky). Add more flour as needed to form a dough ball.
7. Transfer to a floured surface and knead into a smooth dough, adding up to ½ cup extra flour if needed.
8. Roll dough into your desired shape and gently transfer to your prepared pan.
9. Add the pizza sauce and toppings of your choice.
10. Bake on the medium rack of your preheated oven for minutes and remove from your oven. (this is just to very slightly prebake the dough). If you notice air bubbles forming, poke them with a fork to let the air out.
11. Select bottom element (grill) mode on your oven, usually bake mode but avoid Fan Bake if possible. Slide pizza low into the oven either onto a preheated tray, pizza stone or directly onto the rack. Bake till desired texture is achieved, usually around 8-10 mins or until the crust looks crispy and lightly browned.
12. Let cool, cut and serve.
